Huon Hooke
Medium to light straw-yellow colour. Pronounced bready, cracked-yeast bouquet of charm and complexity. Creamy palate with excellent texture and softness, also richness and density, but lightness and elegance. Fills the mouth, and the senses. Fresh, lively acid, in harmony. Superb bubbly of great balance, poise and persistence. Archetypal Champagne. Can't remember when the Yellow Label impressed me so much.

It takes Demarville and his team four months of daily tastings to make Yellow Label, tasting 2000 different wines and selecting 400– 500 to make up the final blend. Their expertise is reflected in a gentle trajectory of refinement over recent years. Pinot noir leads out confidently with red apple, red cherry and mixed spice, over a toasty and bready backdrop of bottle-derived complexity, finishing with subtle phenolic grip and good persistence. Lively acid line and well-integrated dosage make for a well-assembled, accurate and appealing apéritif. The 2008 base is still the best ever, but for a difficult season, the 2010 is a more than laudable achievement at this volume.

RP 87 points: The NV Brut offers up attractive notes of smoke, tar, rich ripe pears and flowers in a medium to full-bodied style. There is a good measure of persistence, although the wine could use a little more polish on the finish. This is Lot 14009913, disgorged between December, 2007 and January, 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010.
