Ranked #8 of 35 2009 Shiraz from Heathcote
90/100
4 Stars
Huon Hooke
Deep purple/red colour. Subdued, shy, but dry-spicy aromas flecked with nutmeg and clove. Medium to full-bodied, soft and rounded, with nice balance and correct ripeness. Fruit-sweet and rich, yet with some restraint and no sign of heaviness. Tannins are ripe and fleshy and cover the entire palate. Moderate length and has a suggestion of lightness in the middle. Good.

A blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier, the 2009 Lunatiq comes from 2 vineyards planted in Heathcote in 1994 and 2001. It has a deep garnet-purple color and aromas of mulberries, blackberry compote and blueberry pie over cloves, Chinese five spice and dark chocolate. Medium bodied and nicely balanced, there's a generous amount of ripe, spicy berry fruit in the mouth with crisp acid and a medium level of velvety tannins, finishing long with chocolate and vanilla nuances. Delicious now, it should cellar to 2017+.

Bright crimson; yet another shiraz to challenge accepted belief about Heathcote, joining those who wish to present a fresh, bright red fruit face, not concerned about crisp acidity. For that is what this delicious wine has. Drink to 2019.
