Ranked #5 of 39 1998 Shiraz from Pokolbin

Huon Hooke
Very mature and totally lovely old wine. Brick red to tawny at the rim; tremendously detailed mellow bouquet with all the roasting-pan complexities we could wish for. Elegant, medium to full in body, superb balance. ( I’m told it was the first Hunter shiraz ever to be 100% French oak aged)

The highly-extracted, deep purple-colored 1998 Shiraz Alexander Munro was aged in 100% new French and American oak. It is a powerful, moderately tannic, dense wine that remains unevolved and youthful. If it develops more complexity, it will merit an outstanding rating. Large-scaled, muscular, and deep, it offers a classic display of melted tar, blackberries, creme de cassis, and licorice. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
