Ranked #28 of 44 2003 Shiraz from Barossa Valley

Huon Hooke
Unusual nose - spicy and herbal, nettles and underbrush. Traces of mulch or compost. Palate is less complex, and more brusque; lacks charm and subtlety. Tannic and lacks charm. Still, has a future. Now to 10+ years.

Deep garnet in color, the 2003 RWT Shiraz is a little shut down to begin, opening out to a savory and meaty aromatic core with gentle black cherry preserves and dried mulberry notes plus a whiff of roses. Full-bodied, concentrated, rich and seductive, it is drinking beautifully but still has a long life ahead (as with 2002). It ends long with fine tannins texturing the opulent finish.

95 Points James Halliday
Great outcome for a lesser vintage; right from the outset, a fusion of black fruits and fine French oak each supporting the other; silky and caressing. Drink to 2018.

RP 96 points: The powerful, complex, dark purple-hued 2003 Shiraz RWT, which comes from the Barossa & spends 15 months in 70% new & 30% used 300 liter French oak barrels, boasts blackberry, kirsch liqueur, mulberry, soy, & road tar aromas. Full-bodied, dense, & rich with beautifully integrated oak, it is more evolved & forward than the Magill or the Grange. It can be drunk now or cellared for 10-15+ years.
