Ranked #3 of 20 2005 Shiraz from Coonawarra
95/100
5 Stars
Huon Hooke
Deep red purple. Deep ironstone, inky, pepper/spice ripe aromas. Cherry and pepper/spice flavours too. Very ripe but cool-grown flavours. Good structure and refinement. Elegant but powerful and long, rich and satisfying. Decadent flavours, with a yum factor. Outstanding wine, and worth cellaring - to around 2025.

The 2005 Michael Shiraz was aged for 13 months in a mix of new and seasoned French and American oak. Dark ruby/purple-colored, the wine has an alluring perfume of black cherry, espresso, earth notes, anise, and pepper. Made in an elegant style, the wine is nearly seamless while concealing enough tannin to evolve for 2-3 years under a blanket of savory fruit. Layered, ripe, and nicely balanced, this tasty Shiraz will be at its best from 2010 to 2020.

Amazing colour, and the bouquet to match; explosive dark fruit and aromas of oak jump out of the glass and assault the senses, and then caress the palate with beautiful fruit delineation and intensity; appropriate oak for the fruit is the key to this wine. Drink to 2025.
