Ranked #4 of 22 2009 Grenache from Barossa Valley

Huon Hooke
Medium-full red, slight purple and black tints. Bizarre spiced wood smell, hints of angelica and spices, confectionery as well. Medium bodied at best, with a firm tannin backbone that tends to dominate. Could be a trace of cork tied up in this. Or more likely, peculiar oak character. Merely, an OK wine. Second bottle: better, with a cleaner aroma and lots of strawberry, raspberry and spice. More flavour to balance the alcohol. All-round excellent wine.

96 Points James Halliday
Small single vineyard productions released in macho bottles of incredible weight; excellent crimson colour sets the scene for a grenache seldom found in the Barossa Valley; spicy, savoury notes frame the core of perfectly ripened red fruits, giving no hint of alcohol, and certainly no confection. Drink to 2020.
