Ranked #69 of 101 2009 Shiraz from Barossa Valley

Huon Hooke
Deep-ish red, lightly black tints and a faint purple edge. Smoky walnutty aromas, savoury and quite oak-edged, but fair quality. Palate is medium-full bodied and savoury with grainy tannin texture and a slightly stern demeanor, without much sweet fruit, charm or generosity. Quite a plain wine, quite well-balanced and generous in tannins, but nothing out of the ordinary and can't see $220 worth in it.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2009 Exile Shiraz is scented of creme de cassis, blackberry preserves and dried plums with nuances of chocolate, cedar, damp loam and black olives. Very big, rich and densely fruited on the full bodied palate, the muscular fruit is supported by a firm level of grainy tannins and lively acid, finishing long and earthy. Approachable now, it should drink best 2013 to 2021+.
