Ranked #1 of 16 2017 Shiraz from Beechworth

Huon Hooke
Strongly smoky, oaky, charred-wood aromas at first, shot through with black pepper and assorted spices, the oak very complementary. Graphite and coal-dust notes. The smokiness is strong and may come in part from stalks in the ferment. The wine is full-bodied and nicely balanced, not overdone but retains a touch of elegance. The centre is rich in sweet, very ripe berry fruit flavours. An impressive shiraz.

A super-elegant shiraz. It is medium-bodied, but has great length, and a very expressive bouquet, with spice and cedary nuances to the black cherry fruit. Savoury complexity will slowly grow as the wine strolls through the next 20 or 30 years. Drink to 2037.
