The NV Brut Rose is a pretty, gracious wine. Freshly cut roses, red berries and spices take shape nicely in the glass as the wine shows off its understated, timeless personality. Billecart-Salmon’s NV Brut Rose is a reliably tasty wine. This is Lot L26712406690A. Disgorged September 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014.

Some 20% of Billecart’s production is rosé (400,000 bottles), claimed to be the biggest proportion of rosé in Champagne. The utter restraint of the house places delicate rosés very close to its heart, dubbed internally ‘champagne rosé’ rather than ‘rosé champagne’. Antoine recounts a tasting in which he poured the wine into black glasses for sommeliers. Not one identified it as a rosé. ‘When my grandfather began producing rosés in the early 1960s, most thought it a fanciful, artificial wine that lacked purity,’ he recalls. ‘He persevered, convinced it would have its place. Those sceptics are now making their own!’ Epic refinement of pale salmon hue and gorgeously restrained red cherry, strawberry and rose petal nuances. Delightfully understated, eminently fresh and elegantly persistent, it carries with grace and poise amidst fine chalk mineral texture, taut acid focus and impeccably pure persistence. Enjoy it in its ravishing youth.

Very pale, gentle rose colour; tending to smoked salmon - far from a shrill purple/pink hue. Soft, mellow, nutty and straw-like bouquet, palate also soft and round, easy-going and smooth. Soft, svelte and superbly harmonious. Again: a superbly clean, harmonious finish and aftertaste. Excellent rose. Drink 2012 - 2015.

Light, coppery-pink hue. Attractive mellowness on the bouquet: toast and sousbois, a little celery and pleasant enough. The liqueur shows on the palate, which is on the light side. A relatively plain, youthful, rather commercial style of rosé. Drink 2019 - 2019.
