Huon Hooke
Deepish red colour with a subtle purple rim, a trifle foward-developed, with a fumy aroma, suggesting high alcohol. Mellow berries and spices, but seems older than it is. The palate is light and savoury, lean and drying, the flavours sapid and medium-bodied, the drying tannins taking over the finish. A very pleasant wine but the price is a tad puzzling.

Estate vineyard; matured 12 months in 3 French oak barriques. It's cool and high up at Trial Hill in Pewsey Vale, gently coaxing out the delicate and pretty side of grenache. Think elegant red fruits, cherries and strawberries, with subtle rose petal accents. A world away from the all too often warm, jammy generosity of Barossa floor grenache, this is a more contemplative style of tangy, bright acid line and powder-fine tannins. It leads out reserved, rising to a pinotesque crescendo on a grand finish. Its finest days are yet to come. Drink to 2029.
