Ranked #8 of 25 1998 Shiraz from Barossa Valley

Huon Hooke
Deep colour. Rich and ripe, intense and attractive with fruit-driven plummy aromas uppermost. Chocolate coated. Dried blood and ironstone. Powerful, intense, and very ripe flavours, with a lot of sunniness. Black fruits and licorice flavours. Very full-bodied and driving on palate. A hot-year style, full of character and flavour. Very good wine, but not one of the most elegant.

93 Points Robert Parker
The 1998 Shiraz is a powerful, full-bodied, muscular red of great intensity, tremendous purity, and a layered, blockbuster finish. It is further confirmation that 1998, followed by 2001 and, hopefully, 2002, are all great vintages in Barossa. The 1998 should drink well for 10-12 years.

94 Points James Halliday
One of the South Australian icons, to be sure, and fulfils the promise of the 1998 vintage. A marvellously elegant example of very old vine (up to 150 years) shiraz, fragrant and scented aromas of berry earth and spice with a mere veneer of oak, and an effortlessly powerful palate in the same flavour spectrum. Drink to 2020.
