Ranked #2 of 21 1999 Shiraz from McLaren Vale

Huon Hooke
Deep, dark, rich, youthful colour with a solidity to it. The bouquet and palate are likewise and there is a lift of volatility. A big wine, very full-bodied and concentrated. Dark chocolate and cocoa powder, mocha and espresso coffee. A very big, bold, solidly built wine with a mass of tannin. Long-term prospects. Grange-like volatility!!

The blockbuster 1999 Shiraz Lloyd Reserve (fashioned from vineyards planted in 1920) boasts an impenetrable purple color in addition to strikingly provocative aromas of blackberries, violets, minerals, and camphor. Enormously constituted with full body, sweet tannin, oodles of blackberry, cherry, and cassis fruit, intermixed with licorice and spice, this opulent, lush Shiraz appears to be more evolved than previous vintages. While already accessible, it appears set for a long life. Anticipated maturity: now-2016.Source: Robert Parker (Wine Advocate) October, 2002 by Robert Parker
