Ranked #6 of 44 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra
93/100
4.5 Stars
Huon Hooke
Deep purple-red, with a slight tint of black. Smoky/toasty barrel aromas are slightly dominant, possibly barrel-ferment style oak influence. Full-bodied, savoury and firm, with gripping tannins and a mouth-coating quality. Solid, dense wine with lots of tannin and lots of oak. Needs time and will repay cellaring.

"Davis is one of the oldest cabernet sauvignon vineyards in Coonawarra – planted in 1957. It’s been a major contributor to the John Riddoch cabernet sauvignon over the years. ‘Davis cuttings’ of cabernet taken from this vineyard are somewhat famous in Australian winemaking circles – they were used to expand the plantings of cabernet around Australia. This is a single vineyard release matured in new (50 percent) and used French oak.
I wouldn’t expect much more of a young cabernet. It is, simply, a gorgeously composed wine. It’s medium weight, tastes of blackcurrant, mulberry, ink, cedarwood, eucalypt and chocolate, and is beautifully framed by ripe, controlling tannin. If it were an event, it would be impeccably well managed. It will most certainly benefit from a stint in a cool dark cellar."
