Huon Hooke

Huon Hooke

Deep red colour with a youthful tint; the nose is all vanilla, chocolate and mulberry. The palate is gritty and astringent, a touch of jam and strawberry jam at that. A similar touch of astringency. Slightly musty too. Second bottle: very meaty, funky, animal, not cork-tainted but the wine needs air. A bit lactic? Quite astringent, still.
Tasted: 25/10/2016
Drink: 2016 to 2016

91 Points James Halliday

Dense red-purple; mouthfilling, dense black plum, blackberry, prune, anise; ripe tannins; oak in pure support role. Drink to 2016.

The Barossa is one of the oldest wine growing regions in Australia. In 1843 Christian Auricht planted rows of Shiraz vines. Today a few acres of this wonderful old dry grown vineyard flourishes on the flats near the North Para River at Langmeil village. The grapes continue to be dry grown and, with hand pruning and hand picking, they provide a wine with rich and unique qualities and are the source for Langmeil Winery's single vineyard Shiraz. This rare wine commemorates the pioneering spirit of the first settlers and their willingness to endure so much hardship for the right to keep their faith; it has been named The Freedom.
