Huon Hooke

Huon Hooke

Deep red/purple colour. Fresh herbal and red-fruited aromas, raspberry and crushed leaf. Blackcurrant and violets. Very cabernet. Good concentration and depth of flavour, bright and alive. Intense and long. Delicious, hi-fi cabernet and will reward cellaring.
Tasted: 24/12/2011
Drink: 2012 to 2029

91 Points Robert Parker

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2009 Cabernet Merlot gives pronounced cassis, blackberry and mulberry notes over pencil lead, Provence herbs and black olives. Full bodied with plenty of clean, expressive fruit, it has a medium to firm level of grainy tannins, crisp acid and a long blackberry laced finish. Drinking now, it should cellar to 2016.

94 Points James Halliday

The hue is good, although is on the light side; the bouquet is fragrant, yet not especially powerful; it is on the palate that the intensity and length of the fruit takes no prisoners, blackcurrant/cassis, squeaky tannins and a spicy/savoury edge all adding interest and impact. Drink to 2029.

95 Points Tyson Stelzer

The picture-perfect season has put forward one of the longest-lived Vasse Felix cabernets to date. This is a textbook cabernet of exacting definition and precision. The bouquet has a gorgeous lift of violet petals while the palate carries all the hallmarks of blackcurrants, high cocoa dark chocolate and classic, Margaret River graphite-fine tannins. Impeccably ripe, belying its alcohol (14.5%), with confident, refreshing acidity holding it taut and fine, making for incredible line and persistence. A cellaring special for $30 at WineStar, Nicks and Wine List Australia. Drink 2019 - 2034.
