Deep, dark red colour with a strong purple tint; the bouquet loaded with charry oak resulting in complex smoky, roasted-coffee aromas, really quite inviting. Cassis underneath. The palate has some intensity and drive, concentration and backbone. Heaps of tannin. It has great penetration and drive along the palate, with a long extended finish and aftertaste. Impressive wine in a big, powerful style, and worth cellaring. Indeed, it needs time.

Took its tally of trophies to 10 by winning four at the Limestone Coast Wine Show '13. It is a wine of exceptional power and concentration, layers of cassis fruit, French oak and dried sage folded tightly over each other, maintaining their claim on the palate for a seeming eternity. It is true that in flavour and structure terms this wine comes from the big end of town, and it's a fair bet that in future the new oak will be cut back, and the amount of tannin more precisely calibrated against the character of the fruit. But it is a great example of its genre. Drink to 2031.
