Ranked #91 of 192 2011 Shiraz from Adelaide
89/100
3.5 Stars
Huon Hooke
Deepish red colour, with a gentle tinge of purple. Sooty, earthy pepper and subtle spice aromas. The palate is savoury and slightly high in acidity, the tannins drying and powdery, the flavour medium to full-bodied and perhaps a tad gentler and more forward than usual, perhaps lacking a little fruit intensity. Merely a good Magill Estate.

The 2011 Magill Estate Shiraz is aged in 100% new oak (hogsheads) of which 65% is French and 35% American. This very deep garnet-purple colored Shiraz is closed on the nose, though it does show lovely red and black fruits, quite a lot of exotic spices and a somewhat meaty, cedar note lingering in the background, though not overtly. Medium-bodied and elegant, it has quite a lot of individual character shaped by medium to firm, fine tannins, a crisp acid spine and a long finish. Drink it 2015 – 2025+.

True to this cool season, a pretty and elegant Magill Estate of lively acidity, tangy berry fruits and savoury accents. It soaks up 100% new oak effortlessly (65/35% French/American), making space for flavours of licorice, black olives, pepper and exotic spice. No great Magill, but certainly an engaging and commendable result. Drink to 2026.
