A single vineyard Shiraz of the highest order, the 2017 Black Duck was a selection of the three best barrels from our Mt Pleasant Vineyard at Toolleen in Heathcote's central north. This vineyard produced stunning shiraz in 2017, which was an amazing year for dry grown vines. The 2017 Black Duck spent 24 months in 100% new French Oak and a further 30 months in bottle prior to release.
Planted in 1994, the Mt Pleasant Vineyard has been responsible historically for many many of our best Shiraz wines. Grapes from this wonderful low yielding vineyard have been a large component of Springflat Shiraz since 1996, and Shiraz Reserve since 2004.
Glass staining red, almost black in colour. Aromas are a dense mix of blood plums, raspberry jam, ferrous earth, cinnamon and cedar. The palate is concentrated and layered with rich but bright black berries, rich toffee, spice and grilled meat. Dense and mouth coating tannins giving extensive length of flavour. Lively natural acidity keeping a freshness to this. The 2017 Black Duck Shiraz should cellar beautifully for the next 10 to 15 years and is anticipated to be at its very best from 2024 onward. 15.9% Vol.
